New software could crack down on people sharing Netflix accounts – DigitalSpy.com

Chances are you probably share your Netflix account with someone else – either that, or you have access to someone else’s password.

Well, the streaming service could be set to crack down on those sharing their account widely with a new piece of software. Nooo!

Software company Synamedia unveiled the new system at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, which will be able to analyse factors such as where users are logged on, and through this, flag shared accounts.

There’s no need to panic if you’re just sharing with family and friends, as Netflix may just nudge you to upgrade to a premium account.

However, if it finds it is being shared wider and that passwords are being sold through for-profit operations, then accounts could potentially be shut down (via The Verge).

Such sharing could naturally account for huge revenue losses for pay-TV over the next few years.

“Casual credentials sharing is becoming too expensive to ignore,” Jean Marc Racine, CPO of Synamedia, said.

“Our new solution gives operators the ability to take action. Many casual users will be happy to pay an additional fee for a premium, shared service with a greater number of concurrent users.

“It’s a great way to keep honest people honest while benefiting from an incremental revenue stream.”
