For a long time, scientists have been concerned about the ever-increasing carbon footprint. The World Meteorological Organization recently stated that the global temperature has a 50% chance of topping 1.5 degrees Celsius in the next five years. Scientists believe this should be the upper limit to avoid catastrophic climate change. They believe that even if humans attain this long-term threshold, human quality of life and other supporting ecosystems will suffer enormous upheavals. Sustainable AI is thought to have the ability to minimize carbon emissions. This can be accomplished by incorporating renewable energy into the power grid or lowering the cost of carbon capture. Several people today have unparalleled access to computing power, thanks to the rise of machine learning. However, the computing demands of these workloads can come at a hefty cost in terms of energy. As a result, ongoing research is being conducted to ensure that AI models better use computer and energy resources. Because carbon emissions occur when electricity is not carbon-free, energy is similar to a real-world carbon footprint. The carbon intensity of a grid can vary by place and time and is sensitive to slight changes in a carbon-intensive generation. Because of fluctuations in electrical consumption, this carbon intensity varies significantly over time and season. This opens up the possibility of profiting from such variances. This is referred to as carbon-aware computing.

Knowing what activities are possible and their influence can assist users in making informed decisions about reducing their workload’s carbon footprint. The Green Software Foundation is a cross-industry group working to define a set of people, standards, and technologies that will make this possible. Users and cloud providers cannot take effective action without a uniform framework for measuring operational carbon emissions on a granular level. To address this issue, Microsoft and AI2 researchers worked with Hebrew University, Carnegie Mellon University, and Hugging Face to use the Green Software Foundation’s definition for measuring Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) to calculate the operational carbon emissions of Azure AI workloads. Using data from WattTime, this was accomplished by multiplying the energy consumption of a cloud workload by the carbon intensity of the grid that supplies the data center. The SCI employs a “consequential” carbon accounting technique, which seeks to quantify the marginal change in emissions resulting from decisions, interventions, or activities. To understand the relative SCI of a wide range of ML models, 11 separate experiments were done on estimates of equal sources of emissions. A review of a variety of activities that a user can take to reduce their SCI utilizing carbon-conscious tactics was also conducted. It was discovered that selecting a suitable geographic region is the most crucial factor, as it can minimize the SCI by over 75%. It was also shown that the time of day has a vital influence since there is a considerable reduction potential to capitalize on diurnal fluctuations in carbon intensity depending on the duration of labor. To reduce the carbon impact, workloads can be dynamically suspended when carbon intensity is high and resumed when emissions are low. 

It is worth noting that these savings and operating carbon estimations are based on a single training run. To calculate AI’s overall carbon footprint, one must examine the entire lifecycle of an ML model. The early exploratory training phases, hyperparameter tuning, deployment, and monitoring of the final model would all fall under this category. Major cloud providers, such as Microsoft, are already using market-based mechanisms like Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and Power Purchase Agreements to power their cloud computing data centers with carbon-neutral energy (PPAs). As businesses and developers mobilize, centralized and interoperable tooling is required to make this possible at scale. The Carbon-Aware Core SDK from the Green Software Foundation is a new open-source project that aims to create a flexible, agnostic, and open core. As a result, native carbon-aware capabilities can be built into software and systems. ‘Measuring the Carbon Intensity of AI in Cloud Instances,’ a study by the researchers, shows how cloud providers offering software carbon intensity information in an actionable fashion would empower developers and consumers to lower the carbon footprint of their AI workloads. This necessitates the development of interoperable measurement tools; only then can effective carbon management policies be developed. Because this project’s potential extends beyond machine learning workloads, the team welcomes developers and other academics to contribute to open source.
